Equal parts fun and danger make for a strong and timeless drink. Like in the back of my buddy’s freight truck with a dozen other friends barreling down a winding road at breakneck speed, or being pulled behind a Jeep on a snowboard with a waterski rope and a friend alongside doing the same… or like every punk rock mosh pit. So dumb, so dangerous, so unbeatably exhilarating. Dropkick Murphy’s, Québec City, summer 2012… it was raining and muddy on the Plains of Abraham, but the hot steam off the crowd made the outdoor show a marathon in a sauna. Like all mosh pits prior and since, it was a violent quagmire of tangled limbs, but brimming with smiles and triumphant battlecries. What war was won that day is up for debate, unique to each individual, and that’s exactly what punk rock is all about. Those that denounce it for its lack of musical talent have probably never felt that forearm burn from playing so fast. But even if they’re right, it’s not about Guitar Hero bragging rights. It’s about the energy, the victory, the unity, the strength, the ferocity... the timeless moment. It just so happens that it also comes with a wicked fitness plan.
lyrics
Nothing gets me charged like pushing around some strangers,
Those few times in your life there’s as much fun as dangers,
Empty out your pockets, man, and tie your boots on tight,
We’re going to slam each other into shape tonight
Punkrock is my cardio, my food and medication,
Laughing in the midst of violent life education,
I think I bit my lip, I’m tasting iron supplements,
I’ll skip the gym this week, ‘cuz I hit up a mosh pit
I don’t want polished silverware, I want bruises on my head,
I don’t want golden necklaces, I want ripped t-shirts instead,
When I’m wrapping sweaty arms around my bloody buds,
I find my dignity, screaming curses in the mud
Punkrock is my cardio, my food and medication,
Laughing in the midst of violent life education,
I think I bit my lip, I’m tasting iron supplements,
I’ll skip the gym this week, ‘cuz I hit up a mosh pit
People say we’re angry, then why am I so happy?
People say we’re defiling,
then why is everybody smiling?
A little insane and zany, a little wicked and wily,
A little pushy and shove-y, smiling and hollering… Oi Oi OI!
Punkrock is my cardio, my food and medication,
Laughing in the midst of violent life education,
I think I bit my lip, I’m tasting iron supplements,
I’ll skip the gym this week, ‘cuz I hit up a mosh pit
